Operations in Burma, February - May, 1943
On 6th March 1943, this N.C.O. was instrumental in blowing up two
spans of the railway bridge at BONCHAUNG station under the direction
of Lieut. Whitehead R.E. This bridge, a vital point on the main
MYITKYINA line, was completely destroyed and may prove irreparable
in time of war.
On 28th March he was a leading figure in the attempt to force a
passage through the village of HINTHA. An experienced and dauntless
N.C.O. he inspired his men without intermission throughout the
campaign; and during the latter stages cheerfuly undertook the care
of his officer, who had been seriously wounded in the head and
shoulder, carrying his officer's kit and rations in addition to his
own on an arduous march of nearly three hundred miles.
