This NCO was in command of the left hand forward Section of Jemedar LALBIR GURUNG's Platoon on O.P. HILL at the HENU BLOCK.
On the night 8/9th April during the strong enemy attack on the position, the
jungle scrub in front of the wire of his Section caught fire and blazed up
furiously. Under intense fire from Mortars and artillery and LMGs this NCO
accompanied by Lance Naik (illegible) THAPA left his bunker and moved down the
exposed face of the hill and cut away the scrub between his section position
and the heavily bobby-trapped wire, to prevent the fire reaching his position.
The light of the burning scrub made an obvious target to the enemy but his great
courage prevented the fire reaching his position.
Throughout the succeeding seven days the enemy directed strong and accurate fire on his Section position which they had pinpointed, but his determination to hold his position, his inspiring example of firing Rifle and LMG alternatively and throwing Grenades in the teeth of shattering fire broke up determined enemy attempts to dig in 20 yards from his wire.
Throughout he had a smile and a cheerful word for everyone and his conduct was superb.
