At HENU on 17th March 1944 this officer was ordered to capture
PAGODA HILL with his platoon. During this flanking march to the
Hill, a section of the enemy attacked his HQ with the bayonet. This
attack was successfully beaten off, Jemadar BHAGTBIR GURUNG showing
great courage and leadership in closing with the enemy and killing
one with his sten gun. During this action he was wounded by a Jap
bayonet but completely disregarded his injury. He then reorganised
his Platoon and continued his advance on Pagoda Hill. Having arrived
at the foot of this hill an enemy section opened fire on him from
cover on the hill. Jemadar BHAGTBIR GURUNG personally led a grenade
party which succeeded in dislodging and routing the enemy.
Throughout this his first action Jemadar BHAGTBIR GURUNG showed
great dash and determination to destroy his enemy. He was a very
great inspiration to all ranks of the column and his disregard of
his own safety was worthy of the highest praise.
