Action for which recommended :-

Major Stuart was Brigade Major of 77 Indian Infantry Bde throughout
the operations of 77 Bde in Burma. At MOGAUNG he fell seriously ill.
In spite of his suffering he took a most active part in the
operations which finally led to the capture of MOGAUNG. On one
occasion on 4th June enemy shelling set fire to a dump of flame
thrower fuel which was situated near Bde HQ. This set fire to an
ammunition dump and to men's packs in which were primed grenades. In
spite of the fact that accurate shelling was still in progress two
men of Bde. HQ having been killed and others wounded. Major STUART
coolly entered the flaming area and started to remove the ammunition
and put the fire out. By this time grenades were bursting and one or
two men who were helping him were injured. However Major STUART
personally supervised the operation until there was no more danger.
His action undoubtedly saved the ammunition dump which was urgently
required and saved much signal equipment which was in danger, and
also the lives of men at our Adv. Dressing Station which was close
and from which we had not had time to move everyone.
