(parts of original citation not legible)
. . . . . . . 44, Sjt. Newton was Troop Sergeant during the attack
by his Column. On gaining its position his Troop was subjected to
violent . . . . . . attack by the enemy during which his Troop
Leader was killed and his Troop suffered heavy casualties. Sjt.
Newton immediately took over command, rallied his men and by his
example and complete disregard for his own personal safety
repeatedly drove off the enemy. He was himself wounded in the
shoulder but refused to leave his Troop or have his wound dressed
until the action was over. Sergeant Newton displayed outstanding
gallantry throughout the action.
