Action for which recommended :-


On 22 May '44, whilst acting in defence of the Stronghold, Cpl. SMITH's section was detailed, as part of a force of 2 sections, led by their platoon Commander, to extricate a 3rd section, which had been overrun.

Cpl SMITH advanced under heavy mortar and LMG fire to his allotted position and give invaluable assistance and covering fire for the withdrawal of the surrounded section.

During the whole engagement this NCO showed coolness and courage that were an example to all his men, and personally accounted for 5 Japanese killed.
