Operations in Burma, February - May, 1943This N.C.O. set a
high example of endurance and courage to his men. On 28th March at
HINTHA he continued to lead his platoon in a bayonet charge after
his officer was wounded, causing casualties, and himself succeeded
in bayoneting the gunner of a light automatic. After his officer had
again been wounded, Serjeant Thornborrow succeeded to the command of
the platoon, and kept it cheerful and in good spirits and discipline
during the weary and arduous march back to India. It was largely due
to him that so many men completed the march. He exploited to the
full his previous experience of war, in a platoon in which he was
the only member to have seen active service. |
