Action for which recommended :-

On 18th and 19th July '44 during enemy attacks on point 2171, near
WARING, BURMA. Hav TIRTH BAHADUR THAPA was (owing to another NCO
being wounded and shortage of mortar personnel) in charge of 2 3"
mortars. During the preliminary bombardments & during the attacks he
continued to lay both mortars and fire one of them engaging fresh
targets on verbal orders from Bn H.Q. with the utmost speed &
efficiency to do this necessitated running frequently from one
mortar pit to another under a continuous hail of bomb fragments from
enemy 81mm mortars & grenade dischargers. An enemy grenade actually
burst in the mortar pit leaving him untouched and completely
unconcerned. In all the Hav was responsible for firing some 150 3"
Mortar bombs accurately on enemy mortars and attacks and must have
caused the enemy heavy casualties. He himself was extremely lucky to
escape being killed or wounded in the hail of fire to which he
exposed himself in carrying out this task. He is recommended for an
immediate award of the I.O.M.
